Creating Seamless Spaces: Windows and Doors at 'The Avenue'
When you’re designing a home, getting the windows and doors just right is key to nailing both the look and feel of the place. Windows take up a huge proportion of the investment of a new home. At ‘The Avenue,’ Sally’s vision for her family home brought these elements front and center, blending style and practicality in a way that makes the whole space sing.
Aluminium Finishes: Making It Work for Every Space
Choosing the aluminium windows and external doors was one of those decisions that really mattered. Sally didn’t want to just settle on a one-size-fits-all approach—different parts of the house needed different solutions. Living near the coast meant moisture was always a factor, and with her past experience with timber windows, she was all about finding something that was low-maintenance but still looked top-notch.
For the front and back of the house, where curb appeal and durability are equally important, Sally went with the premium Paragon range from Wideline. This not only gave the house a sleek, modern look, but it also ensured that these statement doors and windows would last the distance. The high-end finishes really elevate the design, setting the tone for the entire home.
On the sides of the house, where things are a bit more tucked away, Sally chose a more cost-effective option in the Ascend range from Wideline. It’s still durable and looks great, but this clever switch meant the budget could stretch further without compromising on quality or style.
Tip: Want to save some budget? Mix and match ranges from the same supplier—spend where it counts, and save where you can!
Maximizing Airflow: Finding the Right Windows for Every Room
Getting the airflow right in every room was another big priority. Sally wanted each space to feel comfortable and breezy, while conserving energy use.
Double-Hung Windows: In the kitchen and living areas, she went with double-hung windows on the east and west sides. They’ve got that classic look, and their design makes them great for airflow, not to mention they’re budget-friendly too.
Sliding Windows: For the bedrooms, sliding windows were the go-to for the oversized openings. They’re easy to use, let in plenty of fresh air, and give uninterrupted views of the outdoors—a win-win.
Awning Windows: Downstairs, in the bathrooms, awning windows were the perfect choice. They let air in, even in the rain, and their top-hinged design helps keep the moisture out while keeping the ventilation going—ideal for all that steam.
Louver Windows: Upstairs, in the bathrooms and other areas where controlling airflow was key, Sally opted for louver windows. The adjustable slats let you fine-tune the breeze, and when frosted, also the privacy.
Bringing the Outdoors In: The Stacker Door Solution
One of the standout features at 'The Avenue' has to be the rear sliding stacker doors. These doors are all about that seamless indoor-outdoor living vibe. Sally wanted to create an open, flowing space, and she nailed it by designing the doors to open fully to retreat into the walls.
When the doors are fully open, they all but disappear which means there’s no barrier between the living room, kitchen, and the outdoor entertaining area. It makes the whole backyard feel like an extension of the home, and it will be a game-changer for family gatherings and weekend BBQs. Definitely a deluxe investment, this choice is all about making the most of the space and letting the outdoors in.
Flexible Airflow on the Balconies: French Doors & Operable Windows
The upstairs balconies—both at the front and back—are another clever touch. Sally went with a mix of French doors and operable windows to give maximum flexibility when it comes to airflow.
The French doors swing wide open, letting in loads of fresh air and light, while the operable windows help with cross-ventilation, pulling in cool breezes from the north and south when the doors are closed. This setup means the house stays naturally cool most of the time, reducing the need for air-con and making the whole place feel airy and fresh.
Internal Doors
Internally, Sally chose the HAM2 profile from Hume doors for all internal doors, with it’s contemporary take on a classic profile. These are finished with the Brunswick Lever on an oval black plate from Iver, in a matt black finish.
At the end of the day, the windows and doors at 'The Avenue' really reflect a thoughtful selection process. Whether it’s the choice of finishes, the considered approach to airflow, or the seamless indoor-outdoor living, every decision is made with intention and plays a part in making this home both beautiful and supremely liveable.
