How To Plan Your Renovation

Preparing to renovate? Take a moment to ‘sweat the small stuff’.

One of the most common things we hear is “I wish we had engaged an interior designer when we did our renovation.” More often than not, this is not driven by a burning desire to create a magazine-worthy space. It’s usually because having lived through the project, the realisation dawns that having an expert on hand would have saved time, heartache and stress, and delivered a superior outcome that enhanced the value and lifestyle potential of the home. After all, renovations are large investments, all in the name of improvement. It’s important to get them right.

There are so many details and decisions in a renovation project that seem inconsequential at first, but as the project progresses their importance becomes crucial. By then, it’s often mid-construction or ‘rough-in’ stage, and the precious time needed to plan a fixtures strategy, a cohesive aesthetic and an overarching atmosphere has all but gone - off to the tip with the ripped up shagpile.

Fortunately, some careful planning and preparation can help you avoid the more common reno regrets. In a six-page feature for Home Beautiful magazine, HELICONIA co-director Sally Paterson gives room-by-room tips on how to plan for a renovation, and some of the details that require extra attention. Powerpoint placement, plumbing heights, appliance dimensions and door clearances… go get those plans out, the to-do list ready and read the article here.
